Example Call Script for Union Members

Hello! My name is [x] and I live at [street address], and I work at the Boston Public Library. I’m calling today as a member of the Boston Public Library Professional Staff Association, one of the unions that covers the BPL staff, representing librarians, archivists, curators, and others.

In our last contract negotiations, the mayor’s Office of Labor Relations included a clause in our contract that says we have to bargain a new agreement about what work is exclusive to our union before 2027. Since our contract was signed, my union has been trying to negotiate this only to consistently be stonewalled by the Library and the Office of Labor Relations. We even had to file a grievance just to get them to show up to the bargaining table!

Now, the Office of Labor Relations has told us they’ve “closed out” negotiation on this issue without coming to an agreement. That’s not, as I’m sure you’re aware, how bargaining works or contracts works.

I’m calling today to ask you to demand the Office of Labor Relations and Library return to the bargaining table and finish negotiating with my union in good faith. As union members and as city workers, we deserve a workplace that respects us and upholds the agreements they’ve made with us. The Mayor’s office is currently violating this. We deserve better.

[If voicemail, leave name & contact number and ask for a call back on comments.]

[If convo, ask what the Mayor/Councilor will be doing about this.]

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
